Dental implants: what you need to know

With dental implants, your dentist can do more than just replace your missing teeth. They can also give you back the full functionality of a healthy jaw, which has a positive impact on your oral and general health, not to mention your self-esteem, personal and professional interactions. At Dublin 18 Dental Rooms, we think that in many cases implants are the ultimate solution to tooth loss – a second chance, as it were, at a mouth full of teeth.

There are numerous advantage of dental implants when compared with other tooth replacement options. Implants are the only permanent way for a dentist to replace your missing teeth – with good care they have a success rate upwards of 90%, and can last you for the rest of your life.

Dental implants are also the only way in which the roots of teeth can be replaced. Every tooth comprises a crown part and a root part, and standard bridges and dentures only replace the crowns. Whilst it’s true that these will provide adequate function for a time, traditional dentures have a nasty habit of becoming loose, unwieldy, and uncomfortable as time passes, whilst bridges usually need to be replaced, and require work on supporting teeth which can weaken them.

With dental implants, it’s a different story. They are best thought of as bionic tooth roots. Made from titanium, these small posts or screws are placed straight into your jaw bone in a small operation, carried out here at our Dublin Dental Room. Most patients only need local anaesthetic for this procedure, because implant placement is carefully planned in advance.

After the required healing period, which is usually between two and three months, you will be called back to our Dublin clinic so that your dentist can attach your permanent new teeth to the abutments on top of your implants.

At our Dublin Room we can replace one missing tooth with a single implant and a crown, several or even all of your natural teeth with the necessary number of dental implants and an implant-retained bridge or denture.
